I think this video really highlights how far this sport has come. I started watching in 2007 for the GSP vs Koscheck fight. Enrolled in my first jiu jitsu class shortly after that on my 11th birthday because of bully’s in school and gradually over the years worked up to a blue belt. These guys now are miles ahead of where anyone was back then. Even the undercard. I think from that era, only the very tip of the iceberg could compete with unranked fighters now. Talking about GSP, Silva, prime BJ Penn, Jon Jones, those are the only guys who could’ve stood a chance in today’s MMA world. We have guys on the undercard who are BJJ black belts getting wheel kick knockouts and landing high volumes of strikes. It’s insane
@enbonj5842
2 жыл бұрын
True, crazy to think how high the level will be in another 15 years. It's bullshit how many hours these guys put in for such shit pay and with only a few controversial losses spelling the end of their career along with any CTE from some of these brutal knockouts
@jazzyjay4595
2 жыл бұрын
@@enbonj5842 yeah it’s crazy that half their pay can be taken away so easily. There should be win bonuses, because you have to incentivize people to get after it, but it shouldn’t be half. Maybe 75/25 is a good solution or they have a salary for being on the roster thats tiered based on their ranking. For example: champion gets 250k, 1-5 gets 150k, 6-10 gets 75k, so on and so forth. Then the bonus gets tiered as well. Champ gets a cut of the PPV buys, title fights are 100k win bonus, beating a 1-5 ranked fighter is 75k bonus, you get the rest. Obviously I don’t know numbers or if that’s feasible but it would be good for fighters to not force themselves to take a fight when they aren’t ready, but, on the flip side, there has to be a limit to how long a fighter can go without a fight as long as a doctor says they’re fit to fight. Just so you don’t get bums just sitting around waiting and collecting a 75k per year salary and hogging up the division

tbh as a younger fan (first mma memory being aldo finishing faber w leg kicks) i havent thought of the overall progression like this till u said it
@Apollo-th2xb
2 жыл бұрын
@@jazzyjay4595 there Is a win bonus.... they get an amount to show and an amount to win, and then they get 50g for performance bonuses, essentially incentivising them to be aggressive to end the fight or dominate. Some people take an entire year to not even make that much and get by, it's really not that bad
@jazzyjay4595
2 жыл бұрын
@@Apollo-th2xb I’m aware but I think it should be more structured than what it is. Performance and win bonuses definitely help but imagine the guys who are making 10/10 and don’t win. Usually the soonest you can take another fight is around 3 months. You have 10k to live and train for another 3 months. Is it doable? Of course. Is it optimal to have a good training camp? No. I think the win bonus should only account for 25% of your total pay instead of 50%. Like signing for 15/5 instead of 10/10. Same amount of cash on the UFC’s side of things but more security.
What Max Holloway did the Calvin Kattar that night was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen
