What a legend, true example of old man strength! Last of a dying breed of specialists he will be missed.

Maia vs Askren was probably the last fight in the UFC where two top level fighters that are specialists in one particular martial art fight each other. Nowadays, young fighters learn at least two martial arts, probably even more. This and the fight itself with all the scrambles on the ground made it a very unique fight night!

Well put. A gentlemen.
Went undefeated for 3 years with victories over big names and former champions. For most fighters the end of their career is pathetic (Anderson, Woodley, Rashad, Cerrone). Maia was on a 3 fight win streak in his 40s before COVID struck. Man has been fighting top 10 opponents since 2012. Let that sink in.

Those guys were wrestlers and strikers that rely on strength and athleticism. Maia is a BJJ god who rely on pure technique. BJJ is the only martial arts that gets better with age with advance technical knowledge.
