People forget that Joanna fought in Muay Thai for many years before coming to MMA. So her overall fighting career is rather long, which is why she retired. She was planning to retire around that age regardless as I recall. And at the end of the day she lost to some of the best fighters of her generation, one of them outside of her regular weight class. No shame in that. One of my favourite fighters ever.

Joanna Champion will always be my favorite female fighter! I watched her entire reign and each fight was a banger and she exhibited the warrior spirit. Even her last run was epic, like yeah she lost to Zheng a couple times, but that first fight was crazy, and I think she actually won the fight but the dmg to her head swayed the judges, which is okay Zheng is a monster too. Def a HoF type fighter!

I agree. From a technical standpoint, they were the best WMMA fighters with title reigns. Amanda obviously was great too. Hopefully Weili can continue to reign for a while because she's incredibly technical too. It's when fighters like Julianna Penne or Raquel Pennington get the belt that hurts the growth of wmma in my opinion.

@@Borealis-1 The lesbian " mom " just relied on dad bod knockout power and the lack of real talent/power of the women's bantamweight division ( until Harrison arrived...aside from her, all they had was Holm and Aldana ). Val and Joanna ( the former of which was absolutely robbed of a win she rightfully achieved are the real GOATS, and Gina is the real pioneer
1:10:55 Was the moment that cemented me as a lifelong Joanna fan. She gets wrestlefucked by Gadelha for two rounds, Claudia starts to gas, and Joanna just starts piecing her up. That call for Gadelha to get up felt like the moment where all of the momentum in the room swung to the champ, and you sort of just knew that she was going to retain.
Honestly, if Esparza retired, who would miss her lol

Joanna's intensity waned as her career went on. She was a coiled spring early years, as she aged she sat back more. One of the very best, and excitiing fighters. Period :)
