A lot of people don't realize that, back when they filmed the first season of TUF, the UFC was in deep financial trouble. They had just gotten free from being banned on PPV. They had no big sponsors. The live events weren't drawing that many people. According to the Fertitta brothers, Zuffa lost 34 million dollars between 2001 and 2004. 34 million dollars in losses for a company they paid 2 million for in 2001. So, the reality show was really this final, desperate attempt to turn things around. Good thing it worked....

Theyre fighting to get paid in the UFC. Wanna get paid and not be on TUF? ok cool you can go get paid somewhere else. Wanna be in the best MMA company ever and headline a card? You win this competition then you will always be introduced and remember as a TUF winner.

@@OrcistCleaver You gotta add some context to this take though. Back when TUF season 1 aired the UFC was a shell of what it is today. Put simply the ufc had little brand name and the fighters on the show were NOT informed that they would fight ahead of the takings. The veterans are dudes who already make money off of fighting but now a reality tv show wants to profit off of their already marketed skills. In season 21 you can make the argument that people are chasing their dreams. I’m season 1 it’s a middling company that’s close to collapse.

You don't have to look like a pro bodybuilder to take roids, most gym heads who are in decent shape eat shit and train like shit and still get decently big with roids. Dana's haed is bigger now than in the past and that's the sign of growth hormone because that makes even the head and hands grow not just muscle. Testosterone levels only go down hill after 30-35 and hes now 47 and more muscular than ever in his life.

There was more to this than what was presented here. First of all, the producers didn't had a clear direction of format for this first season, second there weren't going to be bouts during the show according to some of these contestants years later, third the contracts had to be rewritten to sanction exhibition bouts because of the theme of the name of the show. So this segment of Dana going all lit-up on these guys was more to save the rest of the show than anything

So basically Dana just talked everybody out of getting paid. They'll fight twice a day if you pay them. No matter if I am the best fighter that ever lived, you want me to come down, train everyday for getting my shit thumped in and not get paid? Come on! They spent years acquiring the skills they have and then they don't get compensated for that? You needed the TUF to succeed not the fighters, its just a way to get money for them which they didnt get. lol Greatest speech my ass.

Think about it tho.. this isn't considered a pro bout in fact your record isn't effected win or lose. This is a tournament and you get to sleep eat and train for free but you compete in bouts just like Olympic boxers at the games. It's pretty much up to the fighter how he would use all that to hes advantage.

I don't think they didn't want to fight, they just wanted to be paid especially since the contender was out at the time which had a similar concept to the ultimate fighter and they were getting paid to fight.

What a massive mistake by Dana not telling them before they signed up they need to fight for free. I wonder if it was on purpose so that way they get the best talent in the house...UFC was sketchy back than so maybe
