I agree. Karo was at the top at one point, and for GSP to come in and take a win was huge back then. I remember watching this live. I played Judo for years, and seeing another judoka was fun to watch, but GSP did what he’s always done….win. Excellent old school fight.

Since GSP was champion for so long we just take for granted that he is phenomenal, but for those not aware of the context at the time, this was a huge step up in competition for GSP and he was not really expected to win as Karo Parisyan was a very talented rising prospect back then. This fight kind of derailed him of his illusions and he didn't really emerge as the great fighter we expected and I suggest this loss was the grain of sand in his confidence shoe that he could never really ignore. After all, if this was Georges' first fight, how much better could this kid become?

I’m not sure it’s accurate to say that this fight derailed his illusions. In his next fight he won the WEC welterweight title and had the longest winning streak of his career. In fact he only lost one in the four years that followed this fight and that was a fight of the year battle. It seems like he was as successful after this fight as he ever was.

I like how people keep bitching about this but its clear they've got no relevant information about the ufc roster right then either. Him saying all that shit provides background if you never heard of this guy that's not GSP which you may not have give this older video more context and comes off as lil professional for someone who essentially was fledgling standup comic, side character on a sitcom, and almost lifelong mixed martial artist himself at the time probably new at what he was doing. Sorry for the long text I know you didnt mean it in that way or werent salty like these other comment junkies lel but idk I think all the intended hate is because people are on his nuts ins a good/bad way or just either way.

The funny thing is that this was only GSP's 6th pro fight and he was only 22 years old at the time of this fight. So good at such a young age, this level of competition was almost like being fed to the wolves for his 1st UFC fight. Fighters do not get this type of experienced fighter in their 1st fight anymore. Unless you were a champ in a different organization like a Michael Chandler, but he had 26 pro fights before he first fought in the UFC.
