Trained with him a decade ago for a while at Serra BJJ in Long Island. I was young and new to the sport and the place. Walked in and was shy and intimidated. Matt was behind the counter and immediately made me feel comfortable. Cracked jokes and made me feel at ease. He’s one of the nicest guys you could meet. So down to earth and humble.

@@robinlouis7180 I think military is overrated, my older Brother is still in the army, he was a Belgian paracommando but now is a medic, he will retire in 7 years. He never speaks or acts like most, he doesnt want to be treated like he is some kind of hero because he knows he aint. I'm had a brainbleed at age 11, was in a coma for 2 weeks, had to learn to walk again, at the same time I got diagnosed with spinal avm because it was coincidentaly seen on the pictures they took of my head after the brainbleed, this later put me in a wheelchair again at age 16, had to learn to walk again. 22 backsurgeries in, 23th comming on 15th februari 2024. 1.5 months after shoulder surgery, the second, this time the right side, I can go on....... There are worse thing than being a disabled vet ffs, go cry somewhere else. I never in my life looked for pity or felt the need to share all this to random people on the internet I don't know because I aint a pussy, I am hardened by life and tackle any obstacle put in front of me myself. All this and still I am ripped troughout my life, am succesfull and never cried about it or asked a pet on the shoulder. I rest my case. Grow some fucking balls.

It's like those teachers back in school that you just didn't like, you didnt care to see the big picture, you just couldn't stand them, but years later, you realize that you saw it wrong, you misjudged and that dislike flipped to respect. Much respect to Matt, thank you champ.

I was teaching in Long Island and another teacher was the Serra Jui Jitsu kids instructor. I was way into MMA and shocked him with my knowledge of Pride and UFC. I got invited down to do a striking intro day (kick pads for zero down and sign up and we’ll take your money each month) Everyone was really nice, but Serra has to make his nut to pay the rent. Prices for a months training seemed astronomical when I was in my 20s making shit money. Now what I pay for golf, and suck, wish I trained BJJ when I was young (now I’m 41)
