Matt Serra is extremely underrated. Yes, he produced the greatest upset ever. And yes, they were losses to Penn and Hughes, but the man had two very, very good fights with the other welterweight greats of his time, outside of GOAT GSP, and I don't think that gets appreciated enough. Honestly, it makes GSP's utter one sided domination of him in the rematch even more impressive considering his much, much closer fights with Penn and Hughes.

both his fights against penn and hughes were razor thin for sure. I think that puts Serra in pretty good company when It comes to all time status during that time period. For that era, he was one of the better guys for sure and very underrated.

Use to love watching the UFC during these years, still do but this was a golden era. Matt Hughes is the man!

IMO it was the shot to the back of the head on his way down that hurt him. Because you can tell that his balance and equilibrium is off. That usually happens when you get hit behind the ear or back of the head.

It's always nice to see fighters show respect to one another after the fight. You can tell that they impressed each other.

While I know there are benefits to being a spiritual person, he took it to the degree that while training his team on one of the TUF seasons he passed around bibles to his entire team. Then he stated that he wanted them to read the entire thing. And for their homework he wanted them to state which religous figure in the bible represented Matt Hughes. To consider yourself important enough to think you are a biblical prophet, well I dont think he understood the message of the bible. In college I took a bible as literature course (new testament) . Long story short I learned that the bible has one very simple lesson in its pages: Be a good person, that judgment of your fellow man is reprehensible, and that god loves all of us equally and unconditionally. Im not a Christian, but I will say that the vast majority of Christians I have met missed the entire lesson that the bible was trying to get across.

@John Neino Serra also knocked out Frank Trigg at UFC 109: I was there. It was such a fun experience. Stayed at the "UFC sponsored hotel," which was Mandalay Bay. For about three days leading up to the event, I'd run into around 5-6 fighters every day at the hotel and casino. It was kind of funny when Serra KO'd Trigg. Like 30 minutes after the fight, Trigg sat down like 2 rows in front of me ( I got really good seats for my first event) and was just chillin' in jeans, a t-shirt, and a backpack. That was a trip. I also ran into Nate Diaz in the concourse between fight when I went to get a beer. At that time, the UFC REALLY branded Diaz poorly. But, I trained at the Renzo Gracie Academy, so Diaz was cool as shit. He was definitely the nicest, most chill fighter I met. We talked for like 10 minutes.

If you watch closely, Cerra doesn’t really start to breathe through his mouth until into the third round. That’s some impressive conditioning.

It seems like boxing, (esp kick boxing) combined with Jiu-Jitsu has become most valuable fighting styles. But yes, it will be interesting to watch MMA evolve!

Both were awesome....two of my favorites. Both guys have good hearts too. I would like to see a reunion of the two. GSP would be the perfect encouragement for Matt during his recovery. 🙂👍

GSP is fully retired, he has made that quite clear. He took a break once to deal with his colitis, but he has made it very clear that he isn't coming back again. Let the man rest and enjoy his retirement, he deserves it. He has nothing left to prove, and he isn't getting any younger. No reason to come back and lose, and damage his legacy when he is already considered by most to be the GOAT‼️🐐💯

@@crazycanuck7811 This wasn't the most exciting, bit it definitely wasn't boring. No need to be a dick, there aren't many boring fights over the years. There was plenty of action here, the only boring matches are the ones with no action, and not many significant strikes thrown. But a lot of you casuals think wrestling is boring, even when they get a good submission, or use lots of ground and pound. I think that ground and pound are the most exciting shots, and those big punches and elbows from full guard/full mount do the most damage. Laying down to just have control for the whole fight is boring, but most people throw big ground and pound or move for a submission once they are on the ground. You honestly just sound like a casual that only watches highlights to me, because this was a good fight overall‼️💯💪😤

@@boogeyman1016 early stoppages can also be luck. Being caught by something doesn't mean you're a lesser fighter. Like gsp Vs Serra. We saw who the better man was in the rematch. Or gsp hughes. Fighting him before his prime and then getting completely annihilated in their next to fights showed who the better fighter is. It's actually kind of silly to say who's better after one fight. Doesn't tell the whole story in many cases.

You know before the Reebok thing the ufc used to charge those Sponsors. Example. They give hughs 5k for a spot in pants. Ufc implements new rule taking a cut of that. Now for the same spot they only pay hughs like 1k. Greedy ass ufc can’t even let them make a little on the side. Gotta have it all

When i use to play ufc undisputed, i was nervous to fight matt Hughes cause his grappling was insane in the game

Really sad that Hughes got hurt like he did. Really tough to see him in the hospital and to see him in therapy.

I don’t think he was the heaviest of hitters he just caught GSP behind the ear, best upset ever though one of my favourite ufc moments

I was able to meet Matt recently. Great guy it’s a shame about his accident. He put this division on the mat. When country boy can survive played the crowds exploded.

One of the best built up fights in TUF history. I'm glad I was there to see it live.

Hughes was more of a wrestler with basic submission techniques because of his strength advantage. Serra was the far better submission artist but less of a wrestler

When I was a kid I never realized Hughes was so one dimensional. Exept for Judo and wrestling, it did did take the rest of the martial arts community an absurd amount of time to realize how easy it is to trip a guy.

He was strong too. But didn’t have much stand up. Even the fights he won were often chaotic back and forth fights or comebacks. So he was good at winning close fights. GSP seem like a much more complete fighter when they fought-at least the second and third time. Actually had a good jab and kicks

@@mauriciosalgadogonzalez2305 yep GSP was the superior fighter throughout those 3 fights but Hughes really capitalized off that submission. Same thing when you look at the Hughes/Penn trilogy the fight that Hughes won Penn was dominating until he got injured and Hughes capitalized.

Seeing these two fight at welterweight makes me appreciate how far advanced MMA athletes have become. In today's standards, their movements are so sluggish and easy to telegraph but at that time, these two were at the top of the division.
