Islam needed this type of experience to grow as a fighter and develop his own Fight IQ. First title defence, Khabib not in his corner, away crowd and fighting arguably the best fighter in the world is a lot of pressure and he held up very well. He is going to learn a lot from this fight and the next time we see him in the octagon he is going to even better fighter.

One of the best fights ever! Here's my analysis: R1 and 4: Islam. R3 and 5: Volk. R2 was very close, but overall I think Islam won with a close margin. Hats off to Volk for such an amazing wrestling defense. Finally someone showed they had the answer for the dagistani wrestling. And his mentality, body language and mind games throughout the fight were superior too. But people are not talking about Islam's striking. He dominated the standup most of the times with some amazing shots, which should ideally be Volk's area of expertize. Amazing fight and love to see them fight some time in future. P.S. Electric Aussie crowd made it even better. Although they could've been a little easier on Islam with those Boos after the win :)

Volk was the only one that entire time who came remotely close to a finish, both by knocking him down in the 3rd and getting GnP at the end of the 5th. Holding onto someone's back for dear life is hardly kicking their ass...

That fight sumarizes the very meaning of mma and deserves to be in the hall of fame as one of the greatest. Right now, Volk is the biggest heart in the UFC, his aim to win is limitless. In other hand, Islam submitted Charles like it was nothing, and throw punches with a guy who won Max Holloway twice.

something that i think needs to be noted is that Islam was very depleted in this fight, not only did he have a bad cut, but he also had 9 hours less to recover/refuel from the weight cut (due to the australia commision changing the weigh ins to be 9 hours later but keeping the fights at the same time). not trying to make excuses for Islam, but that needs to be taken into account, because he looked so drained in this fight, that wasnt islam at his best. had islam been more energized, he would've beat volk more decisively imo, and thats coming from somebody who was rooting for volk (i think islam is boring) the fact that the australia commission think they can change weigh in timings like that (to have Islam 9 hours less to rehydrate, forcing makhachev to be depleted) should be illegal, Australia has a terrible commision. the weigh ins are meant to happen 33 hours before an event, not 24 lmao

something that i think needs to be noted is that Islam was very depleted in this fight, not only did he have a bad cut, but he also had 9 hours less to recover/refuel from the weight cut (due to the australia commision changing the weigh ins to be 9 hours later but keeping the fights at the same time). not trying to make excuses for Islam, but that needs to be taken into account, because he looked so drained in this fight, that wasnt islam at his best. had islam been more energized, he would've beat volk more decisively imo, and thats coming from somebody who was rooting for volk (i think islam is boring) the fact that the australia commission think they can change weigh in timings like that (to have Islam 9 hours less to rehydrate, forcing makhachev to be depleted) should be illegal, Australia has a terrible commision. the weigh ins are meant to happen 33 hours before an event, not 24 lmao

You can't say it's a robbery just bcz volk stopped five out of nine takedown attempts. If u just view the grappling, Islam had way more success and gound time than volk. So it most certainly was not a robbery. P.S. ONE MORE ROUND AND VOLK COULD HAVE DONE IT. THE WAY THAT FIGHT ENDED.

Man, my heart was beating like crazy during this fight. It was a little too close for comfort. I was rooting for Islam, but Alex won me over as well after that performance. He definitely has the potential to become a double champ. It didn't happen today , but it definitely will.

Both of these men are the definition of true Champions The way they presented themselves fight week, the way they went in there and put it on the line. Two amazing fighters giving us an absolute show of skill and talent. They are truly worthy of the title P4P. This fight takes nothing away from either fighter and just shows what a true fight between worthy adversaries looks like. From their complete respect for each other to their display of skill, this was one of the best fights to date. I hope they fight again in the future and bring us another magnificent fight.

This is the most underrated fight, in recent UFC history in terms of Skills. UFC almost failed to promote this fight because both fighters were fighting in their prime. anyway Respect to both warriors.

tbh this is one of the rare moments where i thought no one losed the fight both men brought out the best of each other while still looking good themselves

Volk is Islams smallest opponent ever, so was Burns for Khamzat, size doesn't matter, i'm keep telling CASUALS.

Loved the respect ✊ these two elite athletes showed throughout the whole build up to the fight and after. It shows you don’t have to talk filthy, act like a petulant child, name call and act bitter but you can be an absolute gentleman in this sport & win respect. I like both these fighters, props to Makachev for stating toughness of Volkanovski, how he needs to improve & lastly mentioning the plight of the people in Turkey & Syria.

something that i think needs to be noted is that Islam was very depleted in this fight, not only did he have a bad cut, but he also had 9 hours less to recover/refuel from the weight cut due to the weird aussie timings. not trying to make excuses for Islam, but that needs to be taken into account, because he looked so drained in this fight, that wasnt islam at his best. had islam been more energized, he would've beat volk more decisively imo, and thats coming from somebody who was rooting for volk (i think islam is boring)

Was a really close Fight. I think everyone expected Islam to run through Volk but Volk is such a beast. Notice how Volk is asking the crowd to calm during the interview. Volk is pure class.

great fight!!! very close... but makhachev controlled the pace of the fight and did great striking and his ground was also on top.... nonetheless respect for volkanovski for delivering a tough fight!!!

One of the best fights ive seen in awhile. They both showed respect after each round because both knew they were evenly matched. Great fight.

Man Alex is such an inspiration. Dude started MMA in his 20s.

That's what separates Alex from others. As Islam himself said, he started wrestling and BJj since he was a small boy, with Khabib and the latter's father. Alex was a short 5'6" who simply put on a lot of muscles, so he could play rugby against 6'3" 230lb guys! And he didn't switch to MMA until he's 23 or so! And despite Islam's next level wrestling, judo, and BJJ and 5 inches taller and 15 pounds heavier, he couldn't do a thing against Alex, in the wrestling or in BJJ submissions! I also have to admire Islam, too, though: he's known mostly for his wrestling and BJJ; but he showed tonight, that even when those two major tools his his failed, he could still stand there and do 90% toe to toe against the best stand-up guy at the UFC on a pound for pound basis, for 5 rounds!

Alex is built differently bro, that small body with no neck has many advantages in the wrestling/grappling area. Islam could have ended if he had a longer neck, lmao. So, Alex can thank his body.

Just goes to show you can win in many different ways, we knew Makhachev was a beast, now we know Volkanovski is just as much a beast.

Surprised by how little he shot for takedowns that were against the fence. Only tried once & got it. His striking is looking better & better. Respect to both!

Islam biggest weakness is his chin in my opinion, yes he got koed before but he also got dropped by a jab from Davi ramos. But both of them underestimate each other wrestling and striking skills. That's why Islam had so much success in the striking. And volkanovski so much success in the wrestling.

Crazy fight!!! I had it 3-2 Islam after watching it back but it was sure damn a close one.

His roar when he won...

Volk even had the momentum at the end. What a beast.

More than the momentum Islam was exhausted being ground and pounded unable to get up. That was clearly the most dominant round of the fight.

Definitely not a robbery but I thought it was pretty close. Hats of to both these warriors, made my day.

Islam had better striking from round 1 to 5 and did more than enough for 50-45 to 48-47 at worst. The only knockdown in the fight occured in the first round when Islam dropped Volk to his knees. And I watched that fight with replay. FOH

We got to see the two best fighters in the world go at it. Imagine that. I lost myself in the fight and forgot who was winning rounds. The fight was close and competitive at a high level, and I wouldn't be mad if Volk or Makachev won. The fans won tonight🙏
