Mir vs Minotauro was possibly the greatest moment in UFC history. How rare is it to have two guys with a masterful level of skill in a certain field and have those two guys actually utilize it? Most match-ups like that end with two wrestlers striking, or two strikers wrestling. Here Mir came back from almost being knocked out, awoke from strikes, and finished the guy in a brutally dominant fashion who everyone thought had the upper edge on the ground despite both having polished records and reputations.

For anyone who doesn't know: Shoulder attacks don't hurt like ankles/armbars/slicers/knees. That's why dudes don't tap initially. But you should tap anyway if you know you're not getting out. The shoulder will be fucked up afterward and is way easier to break than an arm or leg.

You had to be watching Frank Mir vs Big Nog live or on PPV (I was watching on PPV) to have really experienced that moment. Big Nog drops Frank Mir, instead of TKO'ing him he makes a huge mistake and goes for the submission. You then see the sequence transpire here in this video, it was probably one of the biggest adrenaline rushes I've had followed by sadness as I am a fan of Big Nog and he was on the cusp of TKO'ing Frank Mir. Take into account that both these men had never been submitted prior to this bout, and then watching Frank Mir just savagely rip his shoulder off almost. Insane submission that the newer fans just won't understand.

It’s crazy how the move was invented by a guy who fought and defeated one of the founding fathers of BJJ, Helio Gracie. Broke his arm multiple times but didn’t tap. Kimura was gonna rip his arm off if his corner didn’t throw in the towel.
