Volkanovski has been such a surprise. Who would expect a former rugby player who once weighed over 200lbs to become a great featherweight champion. It’s such an unusual path to greatness. Really respect the guys fight IQ and ability to do exactly what needs to be done to win, from one fight to the next. Also, escaping multiple locked-in submissions in the Ortega fight, escalated him to the upper echelon of all time featherweight champs. Much respect ✊🏼

@@User1kgmb Incredible fight IQ. Plus, in MMA ground and pound when in your opponent’s guard is a very high reward/low risk tactic. He’s so good at using those tried and true tactics to get the W. Which is what this is all about. He wins. I have grown to really respect his game and I try to model some of my (albeit amateur) game after his because he keeps it simple and never takes his eyes off the prize: the W.

Nobody can question Ortega's heart, but he is too damn tough for his own good. In both his title opportunities he took a shellacking against both Holloway and Volkanovski. However you can't help but be impressed by Volk's submission defence, grappling IQ and his heart as well. 99% of fighters T-City locks that mounted guillotine in, they tap or nap, but not Volk. He taps or naps out 80-90% of fighters with that triangle, but once again, not Volk.

Yeah it's crap the way people hate on fighters who challenge their particular favourite. It's not football. You can cheer for a guy without hating his opponent or being salty when he beats your guy. Unless they have a good reason to dislike the guy, because he acts like a turd, or he cheats, or he is ungracious. But Volk is proving himself to be a great champion who respects the sport, respects his opponents and always forces the pace in his fights and looks to throw down. Great compilation to see how much his style has changed over his career in the UFC. Came in as this wrestle-boxer who would put people on the ground and then just beat them up with pace and pressure. Then he has his big coming out party against Mendes (where people expected he would lose against a man who also wrestles and boxes, but is better/hits harder), and he comes out with a feint heavy game, and using a good jab, to now, where he's always striking, but also has the GnP in his back pocket like he did to Ortega. He's continued to evolve and get better and better.

Look up the "Ape Index" and you'll see that he ranks very highly on that list. Here's a direct quote: "It's amazing that Max Holloway has a significantly shorter reach than Volkanovski despite Holloway being 5 inches taller. Neither fighter really ever had the other in trouble and while volk messed up maxs legs max opened up volks face in a couple spots. For number two, please tell me how the person who is the champ gets dropped three times in a fight, never really has his opponent in danger, maybe wins two out of five rounds, and still keeps his belt? I’ve never seen it happen before. Unpopular opinion I think Volk has Max's number at 145 , I don't see Max getting the belt back his career is on the decline with all the damage he has taken , thought Yair Rodriguez got robbed against Holloway, I don't see anyone beating Volk for awhile at 145 , imo Volk won clearly both fights Incoming emotional Max fanbois calling me a casual
