I honesty think Conor was a bit lucky with this ko tbh because he didn't load up for the punch and it looked more defensive. Great defensive control imo but Aldo messed up and left himself vulnerable. What Conor did to Alvarez though was completely different. Conor put on a clinic.

I was just thinking the same, also... After watching it again, what getting me is the power vs control and discipline vs rage example that played out. That 1 strike that Aldo hit was ALL OUT and even caused Conor to bleed. Just a little lower and it could have been a double KO. If Conor missed it could have been the start of game over for him, but when Aldo made the move, discipline and control prevailed.

This is such a beautiful knockout, which makes it even more of a shame that we never really saw McGregor fight like this after he won the two belts. He's been so static in his recent fights - next to no kicks and not managing distance or creating angles. I feel like the "true" McGregor never really lost and I would love to see him again, but it seems he's lost the magic.

I call it the Ronda effect at this point Fighter gets famous, Fighter gets deals from places like Hollywood or some brand, Fighter focuses more on self branding over fighting, Fighter still loves fighting, fighter comes back, fighter loses for they are struggling to manage peek performance and buisness at the same time. Fighter realizes its not possible to do both, fighter retires. You see this happen so many times in combat sports.

  • @fab-ian

There’s a reason the ufc never gave Aldo a rematch, and then let Izzy, GSP and every other champ get one. Connor is the only double champ to never defend any of his belts. Connor has never defended a belt and only ever fought for money once the UFC helped make Connor a cash cow. Connor has the gift of gab, uses it wisely and got to Aldo emotions. The UFC hand picked fights for the guy until it was un avoidable in Khabib, Dustin and anyone else he now has to fight going forward. I don’t think we see him fight again.

Hungry Conor was the most incredible wave of hype + result in MMA history. Even haters couldn't hate. Not saying he was the best fighter, but that combination was just blockbuster. Rich Conor... sigh. He'd still kick most of our butts any day, but what a fall. Beating up old men, talking about people's wives, death threats, and just insanity. Mystic Mac called it, he'll die a rich crazy man... but unfortunately not a good man.

@F A close fight warrants a rematch, sure. But there is no reason why a 5 round war and a 13 second KO should both warrant rematches. The UFC devolved into this immediate rematch shit the last few years and it isnt logical in any way.

I was at a buffalo wild wings the night this happened. The place was packed and the second that happened everyone was standing up screaming it was so damn surreal. I've been obsessed with martial arts ever since from that high I had watching that. It's one thing to be into the fights it's another to study flow of movement from the GOAT's but it always comes back to bruce lee for me. It's always what did he have that the current guys don't and alot of people foolishly say that he wasn't a good fighter he just was popular at that time but I think that thinking is half baked, bruce lee spoke of training your mind with your body so when you want to move its there manifest immediately and when you move youre determined to move, its something that current ufc fighters and boxers are missing entirely that isnt where you will find that kind of philosophy of fighting and training it's in the dojo where people are refining their abilities through both mind AND body.

This and his win over Eddie Alvarez are the high points of his career. 2015-16 was Conor's peak. Had he stayed active at this point he could have been one of the GOATs, but money meant everything to him, so he took two years off from MMA so he could box Floyd, lose his mind, get destroyed by Khabib and then twice by Dustin.
