It was a beautiful moment that everyone recognizes as such and that’s why they included it here.
The fight against Oliveira was epic. All the buildup. The hype. The tension. The video series on Anatomy of a fighter. Countdown. Embedded. The press conference. The weight-in. The fight itself was great. Rewatching brings tears to my eyes thinking how hard Makhachev has worked all his life to reach this point where he’s finally able to hold the world champion title.
“Dan Hooker will throw a flying knee when Makachev shoots for the takedown” “Bobby’s hands are always down it will prevent Makachev from going for the takedowns” “Charles is the best submission artist he will submit Makachev with his bjj if Makachev takes him down” “Volks used to be 250lbs and played rugby ten years ago” Keep going guys. Volk vs Mak is a good fight on paper. Volk is short and built like a tank so it's harder in theory to take him down. He also has wins over dudes with good durability/chins, and also beat a black belt in ufc. Max Holloway x2 wouldn't go out, neither would the Zombie, and never forget Ortega who nearly subbed him for the belt, Volk fought some killers no doubt.

Arguing over difficultly of takedown is useless, Islam spent 20+ years taking the best grapplers in the world down, doing whatever he wanted with them. The guy with no grappling background isn’t going to be the first to stop him.

This man’s striking was so underrated going into the Oliveira fight, but looking back you can see how elite he is against Green. Bobby can find openings against anyone, but Islam post-Martins is just defensively flawless. But he’s also offensively fast af. Volk’s advantage will still be his speed (cuz if you can make Holloway look slow you’re basically striking like a cobra), but my god Islam was faster than both Green and Oliveira. And with accuracy too. Javier was not bullshitting. Islam is a complete fighter like few we’ve seen. Definitely in that GSP, Usman, Silva, Khabib, Fedor, Jones tier.

Leon deserves all the credit in the world for hanging in there and landing that perfectly executed headshot. But he was get worked by Usman up to that point (R1 excepting), and let’s not kid ourselves, Usman’s road to the title (which included a dominant win over Leon) and subsequent reign was impressive af. Leon has potential but is just not there yet.

I love Volk's versatility in both striking and grappling but there's no way he's getting past through Makhachev. He's more durable and focused as demonstrated with Oliveira fight.

He is one of the many reasons i as an American love Russia and Russian people. Before MMA i really had no reason to think anything positive about Russia, just where and how i was raised it's not something that was talked about. But as a fan of mma starting with fighters like Oleg Taktarov and then Fedor i started to see the light, but now with fighters like Khabib, Islam, Yan, i have so much more respect for the country and people.

I wouldn't say deserves - he may BE the best p4p but you need to win a lot more fights to get it. UFC passes that p4p title around way too fast, like 1 title defense , no way. ( not saying he won't prove he is #1 p4p, but it's about what they do not what they will do)

@@kenzopeypers738 technically speaking charles is a better fighter than volk, in fact if charles didnt gain the 190 lbs walk around weight,he would be the 145 champ by submitting everyone in the first minute, even ortega wouldnt see the clinch with him he will immediatly gets to the ground and get outjiujitsued.
Islam made sure to outclass him in every department so you can't make any excuses for Olives, that was one of the greatest title fight performances and he looks to arguably be the toughest champion to dethrone then you have Oliveira as the gatekeeper.

Let’s not forget that so many fans were clowning Islam before the Charles fight. Saying he ‘fought nobodies’. Arman Tsarukyan is legit as they come and that fight was a wrestling masterclass, Drew Dober and Thiago Moises are both super underrated, Davi Ramos is a ADCC champ with some of the slickest BJJ in the world and Dan Hooker was #6 at the time of their fight. Islam fought solid fighters who weren’t afraid to take the L. The rest ducked him, but now he has what they want and those fighters have no choice to but to fight him. The Charles fight definitely opened up the eyes of all the hive mind fans that discredited Islam without ever seeing him fight.

Damn i just realized when charles leaped at him with the knee, Islam didn't even blink! and was like he knew what to do immediately which is tag him with that right hook.
The only guy to ever take rounds from Khabib in sparring. He's a special athlete for sure, so strong in the grappling and ground control.

He's better than Khabib. Better submissions, WAY better striking, and better judo. Khabib only has better ground control, but Makhachev is better at everything else (look at them both fighting Tibau : Khabib lost the striking and grappling, while Makhachev put him to sleep)

Dustin in his prime is too much of a grinder.. unless Conor could snipe him out (which hasn’t happened to Dustin in years even in fights with Conor), he would get outpaced, outvolumed, and frankly overpowered by Dustin. Not that it matters for this conversation. Khabib beat them both.
