Watching Rory go down in that fifth round is something that sticks with you for a while. Still to this day when i think about that fight or someone mentions it... It just feels soul crushing honestly. Like i dont think of how badass the fight was, i just cant get over that moment. I cant describe it, but just imagine man... The absolute brink of death pain he must have felt to just absolutely sink to the ground in horror lile that. You can see his face as robbie comes in for the ground and pound... Absolute terror! I cant even imagine being in that moment and being alive to fight wonderboy a year later... Those guys fought their heart out those last few rounds. Rory must have felt so much hurt in that moment i mean he was so fucking close to being champion. He never quit on himself. Thats what makes that ko so haunting man, he didnt give up- he couldnt control himself at that point, that was pure bodily instinct because he was so close to passing out. Like the level of respect goes both ways here. Rory was a fucking badass fighter and i truly think the beating he took in this fight changed the trajectory of his fight career forever.. hes just that much of a warrior, same goes to lawler.

No matter how many likes your comment has, it definitely resonates with what I feel. But the beating he took makes me angry, wanting to stand for my own life in situation like this. Makes me highly upset, thinking fatigue, shaddered and strained far from being relaxed, fearing the loss and thinking of that is what was making him slowed down from the very first minute. Gun shy, step behind. This third-fourth round flurry was a glimpse of hope for him, but he still gave up on that and stopped. But this flurry is exactly what made this fight to the Hall Of Fame, otherwise it would have been just another outclassing one-sided beating. Lawler was super sharp, stopped td's, patient and SO precise with his hands that it seems that this factor broke Rory's will almost from the start of the fight. You gotta admit it even if you're rooting for MacDonald as I was. It's just like in that Tyson-Holyfield-I fight, you rooting for Tyson, but he's just not there, not in the moment, that note of the doubt is sounding in all he does. The other Rory's mistake (as I suppose) is that he lost being relentless with that front kick to the body. It may've halped him was he more persistent with that.

Rory has said in interviews after that with that last punch to the nose, it felt like he was hit by a bolt of lightning & his body just shut down And Big John has talked about it being one of the most intense experiences reffing, just seeing the heart and determination, and the beating Rory took

Rory definitey is the better fighter and technician only 25 years old here he was winning the exchanges the early broken nose was the main factor. I broke my nose from a headbutt I dont know how he fought more rounds getting punched by lawler in 4 oz gloves just seeing it doesnt account for his toughness and durability

You're right. It sticks with you. To me, this is one of the most mentally impactful fights I've ever seen. The look in Rory's face at the end, the fear, it's scary. Love Robbie but Rory is a monster. Warriors, both men.

This fight was something else, prime Robbie Lawler against a very hungry underdog in Rory. This fight is in my top 3 fights of all time, along with Dan Hendo vs Shogun 1 and Doo Ho Choi vs Cub Swanson.

I can't forget about Jones vs Gustafson, that fight was insane. It's great you see you're a MMA fan too ali!

What's interesting is that this fight starts slow, but people dismiss this. They were finding each others targets. It literally starts like a calm in the storm, but then really just becomes utter chaos. Both laid it on the line. This fight had everything. Thank you Robbie Lawler, and Rory MacDonald. This is still my favorite fight of all time.

Rory did an AMA on Reddit after this fight, i remember seeing someone asking him what was going through his mind in that staredown at the end of the 4th round,. His response was simply "kill him" This fight turned me from a casual fan to a die hard fan. Greatest fucking sport on earth.

@@spydergs07 No doubt, Robbie was tough as hell with an iron chin. Very hard to put away, Rory would have finished most other WW at the time in this fight. If anyone else was champ at the time Rory could have won the title. Unfortunately Robbie was just too much for him and couldn't fight through that destroyed nose. Hell of a fight, and Rory gave a legendary performance here. Basically drinking his own blood for 4 rounds and fighting an absolute beast

The shot at 24:17 of the bloody glove pointing at his corner is straight out of a movie. Shows the incredible determination it took to win that fight

They cut out one of the best parts of this fight! Right at 22:36, Big John comes over to Robbie and says, "Robbie, look at me. How ya feelin', baby?" Robbie, without hesitating replies, "I feel F***ing great!!" After seeing this fight back in 2015, it immediately became my all-time favorite fight. Eight years later, it STILL is!

I watched this fight more times than i can count on my hands and everytime at 22:22 i get goosebumps. If ever a fight deserved the Hall of Fame, its this one

Yeah, same. This fight has everything! The staredown, the nose of Rory finally having enough after 300 punches. Goldberg's classic line: "So you want to be a mixed martial artist..." at 21:40. In hindsight the boo's in the first round and McCarthy's: "C'mon, let's work" at 14:30 are also hilarious.

I was already a fan of Lawler but Rory impressed me the most...both amazing warriors. Hands down the best fight I've seen live and one of the bloodiest.

Saw a clip somewhere of Big Jon talking bout how he was only concerned for Rory bc his nose got busted so early on. Couldn’t breathe out of his nose almost the entirety of the fight. Which is insane to go so deep with Ruthless. Absolute war that’ll never be forgotten. Thank you ❤

The greatest MMA fight of all time IMO. The carnage, heart, desire to win, damage, esepcially to Rorys nose and that epic stare down are just the stuff of legends

Your right this fight changed Rory And was never the same and lost his love for fighting and I don't think he ever got it back but what he did was give life to christ and is in a much better now which is great to hear he is a good dude and glad he's happy again and robbie is a champion and both men left a piece of themselves in there

Rory had this godlike presence in there when he fought . Technique was chiseled and he always looked better. Sad we never truly saw him peak. Condit and Lawler made him human

Its overrated. Fight was ass until Rory hurt Robbie, you got big hit of dopamine from that then again when you saw the blood, the techniques were awful average at best imo. To be classified as a greatest fight in UFC history it has to be a bang from the start not bang when it’s round 3. 6/10 fight.

I remember watching a while ago, I was watching Khamzat vs Burns and feeling like it was the greatest fight I’ve ever seen. I then quickly remembered that this fight happened. Truly unmatched. Never been at the edge of my seat like that watching a fight in my life

Fight for the ages!! I loved watching this fight live and will never forget the blood spitting at the end of the 4th, the fact that this fight continued with the lip cut is legendary.

It would be interesting to see how the Robbie Lawler in this fight matched up against guys like GSP, Usman, Leon, Colby, Woodley, etc. I feel like this was Robbie at his peak, and people always say once you take damage like this in a fight you are never the same. Not to discredit Woodley for his impressive knockout of Lawler soon after this fight, but I think it showed that Robbie was not the same ever again. The Robbie we see in this fight had the best chin and durability that we've ever seen in the welterweight division.

Robbie was definitely starting to decline after those fights, he already had a long career at that point But that Woodley KO punch would have KO’d basically anyone. It was a missile straight to the jaw

Probably my favorite fight in UFC history, and heavily deserved to be in the HOF ever since it took place. This is the definition of two people taking off years of each other’s lifespan during a fight, with Lawler and MacDonald’s games both devolving to the point they basically had ditched trying to win safely for attempting to take each other’s life. I wholeheartedly believe that this was the closest somebody may have gotten to dying during a fight. It sure as hell looked like it.

Rory is one of the most underrated fighters of all time imo. Was 3-1 up against prime Robbie Lawler, this fight just took too much out of him

I’ve been watching UFC/mma consistently for 17 years. Watched WEC on my tv with the built in VCR when I was like 13 at 1am when I was supposed to be asleep. Rory vs. Lawler is ALWAYS the fight that sticks out to me when someone says why do you like fighting? I just smile, cause they wouldn’t understand.

This fight changed Rory he was never the same after! Robby didn't mind the damage he took but Rory on the other hand didn't ever want to take that type of damage again and you could tell by the way he fought from this fight forward!
